A well-read folk-rock-jangle-punk act from the "college rock" era of R.E.M. clone bands...Damn they were good...The Reivers were known as Zeitgeist back then, before they found out a New Age group already had that name. Probably just as well - when I first saw this LP in the record store I thought they'd be some German dance band. No, there's no synth pop here. Instead there's great guitar work, luscious folk melodies, hooks, and some home-fried good sense. The vocals are shared by John Croslin (deep, smoky, literate) and Kim Longacre (rich country twang), usually one at a time, sometimes playing off one another, sometimes in gorgeous harmony. In fact, Kim has one of the greatest voices I've ever heard for this sort of thing. Their sound is kind of like if you took the serious side of X and put it through grad school. And the songwriting on this album is tops - equally poetic, fun and sincere. "Freight Train Rain", "Cowboys", "Araby" and "Without my Sight" are for a post-punk circle around the campfire. As cool as wearing black lipstick with gingham, back when that made sense. And their version of "Blue Eyes (Cryin' in the Rain)" puts all others to shame. Don't much care for their later stuff, as they signed to the majors and immediately sounded like it.
